  • Criterion Literary Journal

Criterion is a journal of literary criticism by students published each spring by the Loyola Marymount University English Department. I had the honor of designing the inside of their journal in 2011. I designed three different layouts for them to choose from and they loved one of them and it is the one they went for. They loved the table of contents most of all because they thought it was an innovative and easy way for people to find the pages. I thought long and hard about how it would be easy for people to find the pages through the table of contents and I figured it would be great to create dark boxes to indicate each of the stories and I knew that when it was printed the side of the book would show those boxes and they could easily flip to one of the dark spots on the side of the book to find the story they were looking for. I myself created everything that is inside of the book. I didn’t design the cover just the inside typography and layout. I spent weeks making sure that every little detail was perfect from the titles, to the layout, to the spacing. I had no help, I was just given the content and I had to give life to the book and when it was finally printed I felt so proud of myself to be holding something that I designed and put all my hard work into.
